Bar Roller Shutters at Hatherleigh Cricket Club near Okehampton

Hatherleigh is a rural little town in Devon, just north of Okehampton. We installed roller shutters to the bar at Hatherleigh's cricket club.

the cricket grounds at Hatherleigh Cricket Club in Devon
Founded in 1888 HCC remains a focal point for community activities in Hatherleigh. The club's bar is open on all match day and practice evenings throughout the summer. With a reputation for some of the finest teas in the county the bar gets plenty of custom. But outside of match- and training-days the bar is not open and can now be closed off by a roller shutter.

Hatherleigh is located in a beautiful part of Devon, just north of Okehampton. And what better than on a lazy summer’s afternoon watching cricket at the Hatherleigh Cricket Club (HCC). And of course watching cricket is even better with some refreshments. That's why HCC's bar is always popular in the summertime. But when it's not in use the club wanted to be able to close it off, and that's why they commisioned us to install a pair of security shutters to the bar.

Viewguard roller shutters for the bar

HVP manufactured and installed a pair of Viewguard micro-perforated security shutters for the bar. And because the shutters were being fitted to an ornate stone, they were powder-coated in a light grey to highlight the stone on the bar.

Pros of this type of roller shutter

  • Very secure; the Viewguard curtain's performations are 6mm round so it's impossible to take anything through the shutter
  • The perforations allow air to flow through the shutters, so the bar area can be ventilated while the shutter is closed
  • Atrractive design when lit from behind

Practicalities of bar roller shutters

Compared to windows and doors, bars have a relatively low opening. Because security shutters often roll up vertically, the roller mechanism can take up valuable headspace, especially at an existing bar. If there is enough space in the bar's bulkhead, we can often fit the roller mechaniscms in there. Another option is to put the rollers above the ceiling.

Angles to work with

Bars also are often angled, with one side of the bar at right angles with the other. This creates useful extra seving area, but means we have to come up with a solution to install the shutters next to each other at an angle. Here in Hatherleigh there was already a cornerpost in place, so we could fit our shutter's guiderails onto that. In situations where there is no corner-post we can manufacture a removable corner post that can be put into place when the bar closes and removed when it's open.

This diagram shows a centre post and a corner post setup that's often used with a set of bar- or reception roller shutters.

Roller mechanisms should not clash

The roller mechanisms at the top also shouldn't be in each other's way. At HCC we achieved this by pointing them outwards from the bar. Sometimes this is not possible and when the rollers are on the inside of the bar one has to sit above the other.

An alternative to bar roller shutters

So there are various practical and technical considerations to make before installing a set of bar roller shutters. If traditional roller shutters don't work for some reason or are not desired, then a horizontally sliding security shutter is often an excellent solution. That's why we often install one of our FlexiGlide shutters to bar areas.

All these considerations also hold for reception areas, so bar and reception shutters are very similar in that sense.

The countryside around Hatherleigh is very attractive, so if you're in the area we recommend going for a walk and maybe even catching a cricket match.

If you're a cricket-fan and visiting Hatherleigh this summer, see if you can catch a match. And when you go to the bar for a drink, take a look at our roller shutters there.
