When is a security shutter not a security shutter?

I know it may be obvious but a security shutter must do the job it is fitted to do. Externally mounted roller shutters must be able to stand up to the punishment that vandalism and attempted break-ins can bring.

From years of experience we have seen all types of shutters fitted to the outside of buildings, many not able to do the job they have been employed to do. Unfortunately, many people, when purchasing roller shutters, buy on price and not on the needs of the location and the vulnerabilities of the opening.

When we look at fitting shutters on the exterior of any building, we will make sure we take into account the location of the building, how remote the building is and the best shutter required for the location. If extra metal angles, cover plates or steel work is required to give strength to the shutter, then that is what we will make sure is supplied. This way you know you get a security shutter that is actually secure.

What is the most secure roller shutter?

This is a tricky question to answer, because it depends. There are many types of security roller shutters, all serving different purposes. And there can be many things to consider before you decide on the right choice of shutter for your project.

Some considerations

Some of the questions to ask yourself when deciding on the right shutter with the right lebvel of security are:

• Would you like people to be able to see through the shutter (perhaps because you have goods on display in your shop-window)?
• Is airflow important (maybe the shutter is meant to close off a car-park that needs a certain level of ventilation)?
• Do you need to achieve a specific look (for example, if you're installing on a listed building)?
• Does your insurance company require you to have a shutters with a certified security rating?
• Where is the shutter situated?
• Is there any other type of security (like cameras or security personnel)?
• Do you need to consider emergency access?
• Or fire-proofing?
• And what about safety (maybe the shutter will be in an area where children might play)?
